CHARLES R. RAGAN
For nearly three decades, Chuck has counseled Fortune
100 and emerging companies on contract, intellectual property, corporate governance,
securities and insurance coverage disputes, and employed a broad spectrum
of dispute resolution techniques. He has successfully tried cases to verdict
in the U.S. and handled international arbitrations involving every continent.
He is a certified mediator, arbitrator and early neutral evaluator. In addition
he advises on dispute resolution design during contract negotiations, and
seeks to identify the most appropriate path for resolving disputes when they
arise, saving clients years of time and substantial expense. Chuck was counsel
in a landmark case on extra-territorial application of U.S. antitrust laws
and, as a result of two arbitration cases he tried in Tokyo, was instrumental
in modernizing Japanese arbitration procedures and allowing foreign lawyers
to serve as trial counsel in arbitration in Japan. As one of the country’s
leading experts on electronic document production and retention policies,
his strategies minimize the potential for “spoliation” motions about loss
or destruction of electronic information. Chuck has counseled large and small
organizations in developing and implementing policies and procedures addressing
the creation, retention and destruction of information to meet statutory and
regulatory demands. Chuck also advises clients in litigation making and responding
to discovery requests for electronic evidence. Prior to joining RDRW, Chuck
was a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where he served on the Technology
Committee for more than a decade and co-headed both the e-Discovery Team and
the Document Retention Task Force. He previously served as a law clerk to
the Hon. R. J. Aldisert, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3d Circuit, in Pittsburgh,
PA, and was a reporter and editor for The Associated Press in New York City
before being admitted to the bar.
